We need to keep in mind that everything that takes our eyes off the road increases the possibility of meeting an accident and spells higher rates for your auto insurance.
According to a study, about 18% of drivers admit that they use their cellphone to send text messages while driving and 45% of these drivers also report that they got into a car crash or barely missed one. There are also around 3% of drivers in the survey who considered eating while driving as dangerous.
While using your cellphone must be avoided, add to your list certain food groups which can be dangerous while driving. Anything hot like coffee, chocolate or soup-to-go can spill or burn you taking your focus off the road or incoming traffic. Greasy foods like hamburgers, tacos, or chili dogs lead to a messy and slippery steering wheel. Gooey food like a donut or a saucy burrito can ooze something down on your clothes while you are on your way to the office, aside from ruining your day that also takes your attention of the road.
Insurance agents report poor excuses of drivers who are filing a claim. Clam soup. Chocolate cake. Jumping pet. These stuff which can be totally under your control if you are not driving led to missing a red light or not hitting the brakes on time.
Most likely you will never get at ticket for eating while driving but using your cellphone while driving is prohibited in a lot of states and countries. Driving distractions may ruin your records with driving violation tickets but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Deeper into the issue will be lives lost due to drivers who took their eyes and attention off the road for a few seconds.
